Doppler peaks from active perturbations.

چکیده
We examine how the qualitative structure of the Doppler peaks in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave anisotropy depends on the fundamental nature of the perturbations which produced them. The formalism of Hu and Sugiyama is extended to treat models with cosmic defects. We discuss how perturbations can be \active" or \passive" and \incoherent" or \coherent", and show how causality and scale invariance play rather di erent roles in these various cases. We nd that the existence of secondary Doppler peaks and the rough placing of the primary peak unambiguously re ect these basic properties.

Structure of Doppler peaks induced by active perturbations.
We investigate how the qualitative structure of Doppler peaks in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave anisotropy is affected by basic assumptions going into theories of structure formation. We define the concepts of “coherent” and “incoherent” fluctuations, and also of “active” and “passive” fluctuations. In these terms inflationary fluctuations are passive and coherent while topo...
متن کاملCoherence and Sakharov Oscillations in the Microwave Sky
I discuss the origin of the “Sakharov oscillations” (or “secondary Doppler peaks”) in standard angular power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies calculated for inflationary models. I argue that these oscillations appear because perturbations from inflation have a set of properties which makes them “passive perturbations”. All passive perturbations undergo a period of linear ...
متن کاملDoppler peaks in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background: A fingerprint of topological defects.
The Doppler peaks (Sacharov peaks) in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies, are mainly due to coherent oscillations in the baryon radiation plasma before recombination. Here we present a calculation of the Doppler peaks for perturbations induced by global textures and cold dark matter. We find that the height of the first Doppler peak is smaller than in sta...
متن کاملDistances of Quasars and Quasar-Like Galaxies: Further Evidence that QSOs may be Ejected from Active Galaxies
If high-redshift QSOs are ejected from the nuclei of low-redshift galaxies, as some have claimed, a large portion of their redshift must be intrinsic (non-Doppler). If these intrinsic components have preferred values, redshifts will tend to cluster around these preferred values and produce peaks in the redshift distribution. Doppler ejection and Hubble flow components will broaden each peak. Be...
متن کاملN ov 1 99 6 Can Doppler Peaks discriminate among Inflationary models and Topological Defect scenarios ?
Doppler peaks in the cosmic microwave background may allow us to distinguish among the two classes of theories—inflationary models and topological defect scenarios—which attempt to explain the origin of structure formation in the universe. We consider density perturbations seeded by global textures in a universe dominated by cold dark matter. We calculate the height and the position of the prim...
